Bowls Report

Resumption of FWPA Weekend Pennant was met with a glorious day, eager participants and a mixed bag of results. In Division 2 Memorial Blue scraped over the finish line against Hamilton and Division 3 having a resounding win up against Heywood.

Division 1 unfortunately had a winless day on all three rinks. Despite it being tight at the half break, Memorial weren’t able to match the determined Heywood opposition as the game wore on. Rink results were Chris Bramley, Des Pitts, Dean Beckman & Ken Evans conceding to Mick Swan and team 17 to 26. Paul Bentham, Paul Soffe, Steve Turner & Jason Dean went down by the smallest margin of the day against Lionel Pevitt 13 shots to 17. Ian Grayson, Greg Dobbins, Simon Hein & Darren Body finished with a 7 shot deficit against Ken Woolley and team, score card reading 11 to 18. Overall scores read Memorial 41 to Heywood 61.

Division 2 Memorial Blue were involved in a tight match for the duration of the day. Gary Millich, Terry Barclay, Tony Hogan and Tink Imbi were well down prior to the break, with Alison East and team consistently taking the upper hand on each end. As the day wore on the team were able to break the difference, bringing it back to 2 shots at the completion of the game; the card reading 17 to 19. Trevor Wynniat, Pearl Kitt, Meredith Fredericks & Robyn McCabe held their own throughout the game winning 20 to 17. Overall scores at the completion of the day were Memorial Blue 37 to Hamilton Gold 36.

Division 2 Memorial Red were the travellers for the opening round and were unable to take the win going down 35 to Coleraine 43. Macca McGowan had the match of the day with his fellow peers; Jim, Bryden, June Leahy & Geoff Sturzaker, producing a drawn score of 16 all. Meanwhile Ronny Robinson, Jan De Zoete, Ian Merrett & Richard Matley went down 19 shots to 27.

Division 3 had a day where all bowls were impacting solidly on the opposition’s efforts. Peter Fasoli confidently led his team of Robert Liddle, Kathryn Beauglehole and Wendy Gray to a win of 37 shots to 4, whilst Terry Stanley held his team of Jude Fasoli, Peter Sierat and Joan Englezos won comfortable 27 to 15. Overall scores on the card read Memorial 64 to Heywood 10.

Midweek Pennant saw all divisions travelling.

Division 1 were up against Portland on a windy, gusty day and the overall result was close to the end. Memorial 60 to Portland 55. Tom Englezos, Ian Grayson, Jan De Zoete & June Leahy compiled 16 shots to Portland’s Barry Hupputz’s team 21. Graeme Solly, Des Pitts, Tony Hogan & Kerry Cottier met Heather Burgess and team and scores read Memorial 22 to Portland 18 after initially languishing behind. Meanwhile John Wallis, Dean Beckman, Rick Fallaize & Leanne Evision were up against Lindsay Gruar and were involved in a tight match, results Memorial 22 to Portland 16.

Division 2 travelled also to the water tower to compete against Portland Gold, enduring the cold and windy conditions also, to produce a final score card of Memorial 28 to Portland 48 . Mike Rentoul, Meredith Fredericks, Ian Merrett & Kathryn Beauglehole put up 16 shots on the final score card to Tom Beauglehole’s team 20 shots. Nearby Gary Millich, Trevor Wynniat, Robyn McCabe & Trevor Cosgrove teamed up to play Alan Warburton’s team and results were Memorial 12 to Portland Gold 28.

Division 3 Memorial Blue headed to Grangeburn to compete against Grangeburn Red and the resultant journey produced the following overall score line Memorial 51 to Grangeburn Red 22. Peter Fasoli, Jack Rees & Margaret Millich built a strong score line of 26 shots against the Phillip Forsyth combination 13. Jude Fasoli in skipper role with Rosie Sturzaker & Andy Whiddon produced a confident final score of 25 shots against Suzanne Wilson’s team 9.

Meanwhile Division 3 Memorial Red headed to Dartmoor. The overall results on the day were Memorial 33 to Dartmoor 38. Julie McInnis, Rob Liddle & Heather Liddle created a score of 22 shots to create the win against the Sue Tregallis combination 13. Ian Benbow and his team of Pearl Kitt & Les Thomas delivered 11 shots to Elaine Jones and team 25.

Congratulations to the Memorial team made up of Tom Englezos, Graeme Solly, Des Pitts & Jason Dean on winning their section in the Men’s State Fours and progressing to the final. This will be held at Grangeburn Bowling Club 1pm Sunday 12th October. We wish them all the best on the day.
