Portland Memorial News Report Friday 17th October 2025
Before beginning this week’s report, apologies for Round 1 write up not making the paper. For those interested it is available on the Portland Observer digital version and also on the club website.
First up congratulations to Tom Englezos, Graeme Solly, Des Pitts & Jason Dean on taking out the FWPA Championship. After a slow start with 6 to 1 down on the card the difference at the eleventh end was a mere two shots down to Hamilton. The combination worked hard to break the deficit and Memorial came away winners with 16 shots to 12. The team will now move onto the regional play offs at a date yet to be announced. We wish them all the best.
The Western District Playing Area resumes this week. Portland Memorial Makos welcome the Dennington 1 Jets to the shark tent. The teams have been named as follows: Clayton Holcombe, Chris Fleming, Tony Jackson & Tony Hoggan; Michael Sloper, Tom Englezos, Chris Bramley & John Wallis; Paul Cameron, Graeme Solly, Peter Cottier & Kim Overall. All the best for Round 1.
Far Western Playing Area Bowls:
Round 2 Weekend Pennant had the game of the round played out on the blue shark tank between Portland Memorial Red v Portland Memorial Blue. With the scores tied at the half time break with 10 all after 12 ends on both rinks, the afternoon was set for a fantastic final round of bowls. The ultimate winners with a mere 2 shots up were Memorial Blue 37 to Memorial Red 35. The Blue combination made up of Trevor Wynniat(s), Pearl Kitt, Meredith Fredericks & Robyn McCabe drew away after the half term break to score 22 shots to Ronny Robinson(s), Jan deZoete, Ian Merrett & Richard Matley 17. On the nearby rink the results was reversed with a victory to Red. Macca McGowan(s), Jim Bryden, Geoff Sturzaker & June Leahy put up 18 shots to Gerry Watt(s), Gary Millach, Terry Barclay & Tink Imbi 15.
Meanwhile Portland Memorial Division 1 & 3 made their way to Grangeburn. Division 1 were able to produce a sound win, building a total of 64 shots to Grangeburn 43 with all rinks winning. Ian Grayson combined with Greg Dobbin, Simon Hein & Darren Body to bring up a score of 22 shots to Leah McCabe and team 12. Paul Bentham, Paul Soffe, Steve Turner & Jason Dean compiled 19 shots to the Trevor Partington combo 14. Meanwhile Chris Elford, Des Pitts, Dean Beckman & Ken Evans put down 23 shots to the Ruben Ross opposition 17.
Division 3 were able to produce a sound win putting up 61 shots to Grangeburn Blue 21. Peter Fasoli(s), Rob Liddle, Kathryn Beauglehole & Wendy Gray could not do a thing wrong with their bowls constantly presenting themselves in the head as winners. Final scores were Fasoli 32 to Jimmy Bensch and team 6. On the nearby rink Judy Fasoli took on the skippers role and Andy Whiddon met his leading role with nothing short of consistency. The two were supported by Peter Sierat & Leanne Evison. Final scores on this rink were Fasoli 29 to Nettie Ryan and team 15.
Midweek Pennant had Divisions 1, 2, 3 Red at home and Division 4 Blue heading to Dartmoor. All home teams were successful with wins. Division 1 created a score that Ray is searching through the records to affirm as a breaker. Memorial 116 to Hamilton 25. John Wallis, Dean Beckman, Rick Fallaize & Leanne Evison didn’t get things all their way with a determined Hamilton combo under the direction of Norm Pech. Scores were Wallis 35 to Pech 11. Tom Englezos, Ian Grayson, Jan deZoete and June Leahy compiled 30 shots to Hamilton’s Peter Clapham 9. On the nearby rink Graeme Solly, Des Pitts, Tony Jackson & Kerrie Cottier produced the highest total of 51 shots to Alison East and team 5.
Division 2 produced an overall score of 59 shots to Grangeburn 15. Gary Millich played a real skippers game, leading Trevor Wynniat, Robyn McCabe & Trevor Cosgrove to a win of 30 shots to 5. Meredith Fredericks, Mike Rentoul, Ian Merrett & Bary Ivory (debut game) built up a total of 29 shots to the oppositions 10.
Division 3 Memorial Red had an overall win marking 45 shots to Casterton 24. Julie McInnis, Rob & Heather Liddle and team scored 24 shots to W Southern 11. Ian Benbow, Pearl Kitt & Les Thomas raked up 21 shots to H Lucas 13.
Division 3 Memorial Blue travelled to Dartmoor but were unable to take the win. Overall scores were Memorial Blue 48 to Dartmoor 48. Jude Fasoli, Rosie Sturzaker & Andy Whiddon won with 26 shots to S Tregellis 16, whilst Peter Fasoli’s team of Macca McGowan & Marg Millich pencilled in 14 shots to E Jones 33.
Round 3 teams in the FWPA for the weekend are printed as follows: Division 1 travel to Balmoral and the teams are C Elford, D Pitts, D Beckman & K Evans; P Bentham, P Soffe, S Turner & J Dean; I Grayson, G Dobbin, S Hein & D Body.
