Bowls Report 08 May 26

Last weekend saw two of our aspiring Mako players take to the greens at Warrnambool City Bowls to compete in the 2026 Australian Indoor Singles Championship Qualifiers. Both John Wallis and Nick Seekamp progressed to the knockout rounds which is a well-recognised effort, competing against some of the best in the State of Victoria. Nick Seekamp progressed to the final, competing against Stephen Macklin (Hoppers Crossing) 9-16, 15-0, 5-0 (tie break) and coming away with the win. Seekamp will now make his way to the Australian Indoor Singles Championship to be played at Tweed Heads in August as well as securing a place in the 2026 Victorian Indoor Championships held in July. Congratulations Nick on such a achieving such a huge accolade and we wish you all the best in your further endeavours.

The bowling component of the Portland Memorial Club held their presentation day and AGM concurrently on the weekend. Congratulations to all the recipients of club awards who have displayed wonderful sportsmanship, skill and dedication over the course of the year to be worthy winners and runners up. The award presentation highlighted the high calibre of talent spread throughout the club, and we wish all participants a well-deserved break and we look forward to doing it all again for the 2026-2027 season.

Congratulations also to Joan Englezos on being awarded Life Membership of the Portland Memorial Club. This honour recognizes Joan’s many years of volunteering, dedication and outstanding contribution to the club. Her commitment, hard work and willingness to give time so generously have made a lasting impact on our members and the broader community. Thankyou Joan your recognition is so truly well deserved.

Election of positions were also put on the table during the meeting. Congratulations to Chris Elford on undertaking the role of Presidency once again and also to Ted Leahy for the Secretary position. Your professional collaboration in providing strategic direction and support for the members, and the club has not gone unnoticed. Thank you and we wish you both all the all the best for the up and coming 2026-2027 season. Appreciation must also be noted for the other volunteers for putting their hands up for the range of positions on notice.

Don’t forget that May 9th & 10th will see our prestigious May Triples Tournament operating. Teams from near and far have taken the opportunity to participate in the event, hoping for a piece of the $8,000 worth of prize money on offer. Take the opportunity to visit the Portland Memorial Club over the weekend to treat yourself, to viewing a spectacle of high-quality bowls. Games start at 9.30am.

Social Bowls continues each Saturday and Wednesday through the off season. Come and enjoy a roll up. Visitors and all members welcome. Names in by 12.30 ready for a 1.00pm start. Phone 55235571
