May Triples Tournament

The highly anticipated May Triples Tournament has once again been completed at the Portland Memorial Bowling Club and been categorised as a huge success. Thirty two teams from across the state/interstate took to the shark tank and, for the tournaments two day duration the rhythmic click of bowls meeting bowls/jack could be heard under the dome, which fortunately sheltered participants from the unpredictable wintry conditions evident over the weekend.

The two day event showcased top quality bowls, strategic game plans and the unique camaraderie associated with the sport of lawn bowls. Meanwhile, the club’s volunteers worked tirelessly, ensuring the hospitality matched the quality of the play.

As the second day drew to the final ends of play, the margins to determine the first four place getters fell into place. Congratulations to the top four and recognition to the winning team taking out the top title. The title honors went to a combined team made up of Paul Cameron (Portland Memorial), Mark Bowles (Warrnambool) & Stephanie Hunt (City Memorial Warrnambool). Second placing went to a Koroit combination; Damien Coolahan, Michael Funcke & Scott Boschen. A Memorial team took third place honors; Chris Elford, Jason Dean & Des Pitts and in fourth spot were Brock Wescombe (City Memorial Warrnambool), Josh Walker Davis (Belrose NSW) & Chris Fleming (Portland Memorial).

The tournament continues to remain a feature on the Makos’ social calendar  and credit to its successful implementation must be given to the personnel around the club: Bowls Co-ordinator, committee members, volunteers, raffle co-ordinator, kitchen, bar and general staff, management and sponsor generosity.

Meanwhile Matt Ross-Watson, a recently new bowler on the scene, (having been with the club for approximately 18 months), took part in the Novice State Carnival. Ross-Watson combined with Johanna Sabaliauskas (Strath Kooka’s) and after three wins on day 1, made it to the knockout semi finals which was a great effort. Unfortunately this is where their bowls journey completed. Matt also took part in the Singles, both events providing an invaluable experience in his development as a bowler.
