Whilst Far Western midweek pennant hit the start of the finals series, the Makos were talking themselves into taking second position on the Western District Playing Area ladder in order to give them a double chance in the finals.

Western District Playing Area Report for Round 14

The Makos took on 4th placed City Gold in the shark tank and proved themselves worthy winners on the day giving them the desired 2nd place on the ladder. Overall scores on the day were Makos creating a convincing 81 on the score card to City Gold 51. Michael Sloper with his team of Peter Cottier, Chris Elford & Tony Jackson had a strong win against Greg Ritchie 27/13. A similar score line was taking place on the nearby rink under the guidance of Tom Englezos. Nick Seekamp, Ian Grayson & John Wallis delivered consistent bowls to the Englezos head to build a total of 29 shots to Matthew Fleming’s 13. Paul Cameron, Graeme Solly, Chris Fleming, & Kim Overall were involved in a tight combat against Paul Symmon’s and team crossing the line 25 all. This week sees the Makos up against the top team City Red in the 2nd Semi to be played at Port Fairy. The Makos, playing on neutral ground will be determined to be competitive. We wish them all the best on the day.

Far Western Playing Area Weekend Report for the first round of the final series:

Division 1 matched up against Portland Gold for the first round of the finals on the Heywood green. Overall scores saw Memorial walk away winners with a 73/57 shot win. All rink games were tough and testing, producing similar scorelines. Greg Dobbins, Paul Soffe, Simon Hein & Paul Bentham won 26/18 against the Barry Huppatz combination. Chris Bramley, Des Pitts, Ken Evans & Leanne Evison’s score card read 23/18 against Linday Gruar and team. Meanwhile Tony Hogan, Dean Beckman, Steve Turner & Jason Dean also struck a win of 24/21 against Bob Bowden. The team will now match up against Heywood, this Saturday on the Portland green.

Division 2 Red were up against Hamilton Green at Heywood, coming away with a well fought win 44/37 entitling them to a Grand final berth. Don McGowan teaming with Jim Bryden, Geoff Sturzaker & June Leahy were involved in a tight match up, finally crossing the line with a mere deficit of 1, the scoreline reading 21/23 against the Gordon Scott combination.

Division 3 were matched up against Hamilton Yellow in the semi final but alas it was not to be their day with overall scores 28/50. Peter Fasoli, Ian Merrett, Judy Fasoli & Rob Abschinski were out bowled 10/27 against Duncan McRae’s team. Rob Liddle, Terry Stanley, Peter Sierat & Dave Attrill were involved in a closer match up with the score line reading 18/23. This ends the Division 3 final’s campaign and we congratulate them on their efforts over the course of the year.

FWPA Midweek pennant Report for the first week of finals.

Division 1 travelled to Hamilton to compete against Portland in the semi final. Overall scores on the day were 66/47. Tom Englezos, Ian Grayson, Jan De Zoete & June Leahy played strategically producing a win of 22/11 against Barry Huppatz and team. Graeme Solly, Des Pitts, Tony Jackson & Kerrie Cottier were challenged by the Heather Burgess team finding scoring opportunities difficult to mark up. The second half of the game proved to be more fruitful, building to a scoreline of 17 to the oppositions 22. The John Wallis, Dean Beckman, Rick Fallaize & Leanne Evison team combined well as a team to rack up 27 shots to Lindsay Graur and team 14.

Division 2 were also bowling at Hamilton against Porltand Gold, going down 37/46. Gerry Watt, Meredith Fredericks, Kathryn Beauglehole & Mike Rentoul played well to produce a win on their rink 26/20 against Des Hein’ team. Nearby Gary Milich, Trevor Wynniat, Trevor Cosgrove & Robyn McCabe found scoring shots hard to keep with a focused Portland Gold team led by Alan Warburton. Scores 11/26. Memorial will now play Hamilton in the preliminary final at a destination yet to be determined.

Third placed Division 3 Red were also present on the green at Hamilton, playing against Macarthur fourth. Ian Benbow, Les Thomas & Heather Liddle were slow to get on the score card however after the break they determinedly built a respectable score line of 19/22 against Robert Jehu. Meanwhile Julie McInnis, Rob Liddle & Barry Ivory combined well to win with 23 shots against Carol Uebergang and team 12.

Division 3 Blue placed top of the ladder also travelled to Hamilton, playing instead at Grangeburn against second placed Heywood. Overall scores were 28/45. Peter Fasoli, Pearl Kitt & Jack Rees were beaten 17/22 by George Pavlovski’s team. Ian Merrett, Jude Fasoli & Kevin McGrath finished the day with a scoreline of 11/23 against the Neville Hodge combination.

Ironically the Division 3 preliminary final will be a battle of the Memorial Red and Blue teams at a venue yet to be determined. We wish both teams well.
